Works on flood mitigation project along Estero de San Miguel in progress

QUEZON CITY, (PIA) -- The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is currently rushing the installation of new booster pumps along Estero de San Miguel at Mendiola Street in Manila City.

According to DPWH, the project is part of the flood mitigation program, especially during the rainy season.

According to a report from DPWH National Capital Region Director Loreta M. Malaluan, the ongoing booster pump project has received an allocation of P100 million for Phase 1 and another P100 million for Phase 2.

Phase 1 which covers the installation of one (1) booster pump including its accessories is now 70 percent (70%) completed and is expected to be completed within the year. While Phase 2 which is currently ongoing will add one (1) more booster pump and ancillary equipment.

When completed, each booster pump will be able to discharge 1 cubic meter per second of floodwater, hence reducing the overflow of Estero de San Miguel, and preventing flooding in the area.

Public Works and Highways Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan also said that the installation of booster pumps is being implemented in Metro Manila along with various structural and non-structural measures to mitigate flooding of major roads during rainy and typhoon season. (DPWH/PIA-NCR)
