QUEZON CITY, (PIA) -- A total of 409 Filipinos have successfully evacuated from the conflict in Sudan, while some factions of the military that staged a coup in 2021 are still fighting.
That number is the combined evacuation by the Filipino community, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported, adding that those mentioned used the 72-hour truce of the fighters to escape.
"With the help of the government, 409 Filipinos stuck in the mess that is happening in Sudan have been evacuated," said the Presidential Communications Office, Thursday.
"In total, 335 of the evacuees are overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) with their families while some of the remaining numbers are students of Islamic studies there."
The PCO said that the Armed Forces of the Philippines, DMW and DFA continue to cooperate in the implementation of the repatriation program.
Among the first batch of evacuees, which was organized by one Nelson Alvarez, were 35 overseas Filipino workers and 15 students.
Despite this, 21 employees of the DAL company failed to enter Egypt due to the lack of visas. On board three buses led by one Bernard Comia were 135 OFWs and their families.
They came from Khartoum to Egypt. About 200 OFWs were led by one Dione Cabale. They left Khartoum and fincilitate PE Cairo through Hon. Consul Tariq.
More than 50 OFWs were led by Leilanie Canlas who are just waiting for repatriation."The AFP is coordinating with the DFA and DMW to accommodate them on the next buses leaving for Egypt," the PCO added.
Just this week, the death toll from the unrest has reached 459, according to the World Health Organization. At least 4,072 of the survivors were wounded. (PIA-NCR)
