DSWD disburses cash aid to sari-sari store owners, rice retailers in Leyte

TACLOBAN CITY -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office VIII (DSWD FO VIII) disbursed P15,000 cash grants each to 97 sari-sari store owners in the 1st District of Leyte at the Civic Center, Alangalang, Leyte, on Sept. 29.

Of this number, 95 sari-sari store owners were from Alangalang, and one each in Sta. Fe and Pastrana. These beneficiaries conformed with Executive Order No. 39 or the mandated price ceiling on rice.

The executive order imposed a price ceiling of P41 for regular-milled rice and P45 for well-milled rice to mitigate the impact of rising food prices on consumers.

Karen L. Estalani, a sari-sari store owner and rice retailer, gave her words of appreciation for the assistance provided by the government as she would use the money to support her livelihood.

Worth P14 million was simultaneously distributed to all municipalities in Leyte, including Samar and Biliran, with 965 beneficiaries in the entire region.

Meanwhile, a separate payout was conducted at the Business One Stop Shop Center, Tacloban City, on Sept. 22, with 44 rice retailers in the 1st District of Leyte who received the same cash aid.

The beneficiaries comprised seven in Alangalang, two in Palo, 24 in Tacloban, nine in Tanauan, and one each in Tolosa and Sta. Fe, respectively.

Diane G. Ang, a 51-year-old rice retailer, said she would add another six sacks of rice to help in her rice investment after the payout. She is also thankful for the assistance given.

Worth P14 million was also simultaneously distributed to all municipalities in Leyte, including Samar and Biliran, on Sept. 22, with 317 beneficiaries in the entire region.

The qualified beneficiaries were identified based on the certified list of affected rice retailers and sari-sari store owners submitted by the Department of Trade and Industry Regional Office VIII to (DSWD FO VIII) endorsed for the provision of the Sustainable Livelihood Program – Emergency Relief Subsidy (SLP-ERS).

During the cash assistance distribution, qualified beneficiaries should undergo a verification process to ensure the retailer’s business identity and profiling for interview and signing of the SLP profile form, then releasing cash assistance as the beneficiaries needed to be photographed for documentation purposes.

In a statement, Assistant Secretary Dominic R. Tolentino Jr. of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Regional Operations Group, emphasized that the beneficiary’s compliance with the EO 39 gave an excellent impression to the economy in the Philippines.

DTI is one of the special task forces that assist in monitoring the compliance of the mandated price ceilings on rice in the market.

Meanwhile, Assistant Regional Director for Administration Clarito T. Logronio of DSWD FO VIII sincerely hoped that the assistance would be utilized according to its purpose so that it would eventually benefit their fellow compatriots in the country and they could purchase rice at a very affordable price.
