Surigao Norte uses QR codes to identify household pets

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte (PIA) -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Surigao del Norte introduces “MaluPET,” a free pet QR code identification system that is designed to promote responsible pet ownership.

This initiative equipped pet owners with a reliable means of identification, as the program will bolster pet recovery efforts in cases of straying, among others.

According to Provincial Director Mariel P. Makinano of DOST Surigao del Norte, through the Provincial Research, Innovation, and Science Museum (PRISM), it will generously sponsor a minimum of 500 MaluPET QR codes, meticulously crafted from medium density fiber (MDF) board material through the advanced laser engraving technology available at the facility.

She said that the said codes will be distributed during the provincial, city, and municipal kick-off event of Rabies Awareness Month in March 2024, which presents an excellent opportunity to engage with the community on matters relating to pet welfare.

This initiative was also forged between DOST – Surigao del Norte and  the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Surigao Nickel.

"This collaboration aligns with the objectives of the PRISM, a joint endeavor between the provincial government of Surigao del Norte and the DOST, dedicated to cultivating a dynamic science, technology, and innovation ecosystem within the province, making this partnership with JCI Surigao Nickel a valuable addition to its ongoing efforts," Makinano said.

The partnership between JCI Surigao Nickel, under the leadership of its 2024 LO President, John Lester R. Fetalvero, and DOST Surigao del Norte was formalized during the ceremonial signing of the declaration of commitment on Feb. 13.

The PRISM museum of the DOST aims to promote and develop a vibrant science, technology, and innovation ecosystem in the region by providing a platform for innovation and hands-on learning experiences.

On the other hand, the JCI Surigao Nickel is a dynamic organization of young leaders dedicated to creating positive change in their communities. (SDR/PIA Surigao del Norte with a report from DOST- Surigao del Norte)
