Residents flock Family Planning Day in Tuburan, Cebu

Fifteen-year old Rose (not her real name) is a new mother. She just gave birth to a baby girl last month. Recently, she got an implant insertion to prevent another pregnancy as she tries to handle her studies and her own family together with her husband.

"Nagpa-implant ko aron di masundan akong anak kay bata pa pud kaayo ko (I had an implant so I won't give birth again right away since I'm still too young)," she said.

Rose's mother convinced and supported her to use a family planning (FP) method to protect her learning from their experience with what happened to her older sister.

She said her sister, who also got pregnant early, died due to complications while giving birth.

"Fifteen years old sad to siya, sunod-sunod iyang panganak, lima kabuok. Mao to iyang gikamatyan (She was also 15 years old, and she gave birth successively to five kids. That caused her death)," Rose shared.

Rose is one of the 68 mothers who availed of the different FP methods given for free during the FP Outreach Caravan in Tuburan town on June 29.

Of the 68, 60 availed of the implants, three for pills, two for depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) or injectables, and one for condom.

Meanwhile, two mothers also asked for the removal of their implants as they already want to get pregnant.

Tuburan Municipal Health Officer Dr. Carmina Jemma Faunillan lauded the mothers who availed of the different FP methods.

Buot pasabot ani kamo tanan naghuna-huna sa inyong kaugalingon ug sa inyong pamilya. Ayaw gyud mo pagduha-duha og naa mo’y kahingawa o mga pangutana. Dili ni pinugsanay. Ang pagdawat ani dapat bukas sa inyong kabubut-on (What this shows is you're thinking of your own welfare and your family's. This is voluntary)," she expressed.

Benefits of family planning

Dr. Faunillan also urged the mothers to ask for clarifications of their concerns with FP methods as this matter is surrounded by many myths and misconceptions.

“Family planning is not about kanang muhunong sa pagpanganak (to stop giving birth). It is an intervention aron ang mama ug bata dili mamatay because delikado ang manganak, aron ni maatiman ang bata ug dili ma-malnourished (so the mother and child will not die due to risky pregnancies, and the child will not become malnourished),” said Dionica Saquilon of the Department of Health Central Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH-CVCHD).

Ronadit Arriesgado, DOH-CVCHD FP coordinator, added that family planning also gives importance to mothers and families who want to get pregnant.

This is to our benefit so we can remain healthy and have time to care for our newborn. If the mother is healthy, the child is healthy also. It will also lessen the burden on the father),” she emphasized.

Municipal Population Officer Isabel Polotan shared that for the month of May 2021 alone, there are already 9,053 current users of modern family planning in Tuburan.

They continue to disseminate information and educate the residents of the various kinds, health benefits, and myth busters on family planning through the regular FP Days done in the town’s rural health units.

They also continue to partner with the Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) VII, DOH-CVCHD, Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) VII, Integrated Midwives’ Association of the Philippines (IMAP), and USAID Reach Health for the delivery of such services to their constituents.

Families who are interested to avail of the different modern family planning methods may visit their nearest rural health units.

All supplies from DOH and POPCOM are given for free.  (PR)
