DHSUD chief leads turnover of housing units for 'Yolanda' victims

BANTAYAN, Cebu -- Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) Secretary Eduardo Del Rosario on Thursday led the awarding of housing units and groundbreaking ceremony for a mini-market and covered court intended for residents affected by super typhoon Yolanda in the remote island of Bantayan, Cebu.

The housing czar graced the turnover of 450 housing units by the National Housing Authority (NHA) to beneficiaries in Barangay Kabac, Bantayan town.

According to Secretary Del Rosario, the awarding of housing units and provision of new facilities are in line with the government’s commitment in helping Filipino families affected by previous calamities.

“Together with our key shelter agencies such as the NHA, our Department remains committed to reaching out to Filipino families, especially those impacted by natural disasters and from the low-income bracket, in providing them decent housing and sustainable and resilient communities,” Secretary Del Rosario stressed.

“It is part of our responsibility to help and capacitate the underprivileged and the underserved to have a house of their own,” he noted.

Joining the housing czar at the turnover ceremony were Assistant Secretary Leira Buan, Bantayan Mayor Art Despi, DHSUD Region 7 OIC-Director Francis Ordeniza and NHA Region 7 Manager Hermes Jude Juntilo.

Secretary Del Rosario likewise led the signing of a memorandum of agreement and breaking of ground for the construction of a covered court and mini-market also in the area. The DHSUD chief said the projects will be carried out using incentivized compliance by partner developers to balanced housing program.

“These facilities will play a pivotal role in promoting and achieving our goal of providing decent homes on sustainable communities for all Filipino families, even those in the remotest areas of the country,” Secretary Del Rosario said.

The DHSUD has been scaling up partnerships with various local government units throughout the country in executing their respective shelter plans. Since December last year, DHSUD had finalized over a dozen housing pacts with LGUs from across the country. It hopes to seal about 50 such agreements this year.

The Department also constantly coordinates with LGUs in ramping up disaster risk management and climate adaptation efforts within localities.

One key measure is the promotion of prescribed land use planning and zoning standards for the formulation of Comprehensive Land Use Plans and Zoning Ordinances for local governments. (DHSUD)
