Bong Go helps hundreds of internally displaced residents in Virac, Catanduanes as he encourages public to avail of medical assistance offered in Malasakit Centers

PASAY CITY -- On Monday, August 2, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go continued his efforts to serve more underprivileged communities amid the global pandemic as he sent his team to Virac, Catanduanes to distribute assistance to 336 internally displaced people from the municipalities of Bato, Virac, and San Andres.

In his video message, the Chair of Senate Committee on Health and Demography reminded the beneficiaries who were in attendance at Virac Plaza Covered Court to continue looking out for their health and well-being. He then reached out to residents with health concerns as he encouraged them to visit the recently opened Malasakit Center at the Eastern Bicol Medical Center in Virac.

The Malasakit Center Program was signed into law in 2019 which aims to provide convenient access to medical programs offered by the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Health, Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office.

The Senator also reminded the public to continue adhering to necessary health preventive measures, considering that the new Delta variant of COVID-19 is more threatening.

He then reassured them that vaccines are continuously being rolled out to more far-flung communities to ensure that the country attains population protection to confidently achieve herd immunity in communities soon.

Go’s team implemented necessary safety and health protocols during the relief operation as they handed out essentials such as meals, masks, face shields, and vitamins to the beneficiaries.

Some recipients were also given new pairs of shoes and bicycles that they can use while others received computer tablets that are intended to help their children participate better during classes under the blended learning set-up.

Apart from the assistance provided by Go, representatives from DSWD granted each internally displaced person with livelihood assistance grants through their Sustainable Livelihood Program.

Alissa Bori Briss, 45, expressed her optimism that she will be able to sustain her five children even during the health crisis as she said that the assistance given by Go and DSWD will greatly support their living conditions.

As Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, Go also supported the funding of various infrastructure projects in Catanduanes, such as the construction or improvement of various roads, rehabilitation of the water supply pipelines, and construction of sewage treatment facilities in Virac.

He also supported the construction of a provincial integrated transport terminal and business complex for Catanduanes, construction of a flood control structure and seawalls in San Andres, and reconstruction of the municipal multi-purpose building in San Miguel.

Concluding his message, Go expressed his gratitude towards the local government leaders for ensuring their community’s recovery. Among the officials were Representative Hector Sanchez, Governor Joseph Cua, Virac Mayor Posoy Sarmiento, San Andres Mayor Peter Cua, Bato Mayor Johnny Rudolfo, and DSWD Region 5 Team Leader Edlyn Noble.
