Farmers' group holds Harvest Festival at Capiñahan family model farm in Naval

TACLOBAN CITY -- The Capinahan Farmers Irrigators Association (IA) successfully held its first Harvest Festival as it harvested 95kg of lettuce, 117kg of tomato, 50kg of eggplant, and 3kg of cauliflower on August 11 in Capinahan, Naval, Biliran.

The association is a recipient of the P3 million worth of family model farm project under the Irrigation Management Transfer Support Services – Locally Funded Projects (IMTSS-LFP) for CY 2019.

The project includes a nursery; three (3) greenhouses where each measure 26 meters in length and 4 meters in width, with two (2) units inside plots measuring 26 meters x 1.35 meters; and a water system for drip irrigation.

The project covers a parcel of land with an area of 8,246 square meters under Usufruct Agreement for 10 years in favor of the Irrigators Association.

Capinahan was chosen for this project because its climate is favorable for high value crops.

Likewise, the IA was recognized with its high agricultural productivity in the entire municipality of Naval.

In behalf of the NIA management, Acting Regional Manager Ruby C. Tuan Jr., assisted by the Biliran- Leyte del Norte-Leyte del Sur IMO Manager, Conrado M. Samson, spearheaded the ribbon cutting and unveiling of project marker.

Also present during the activity the activity were officers and members of Capinahan Farmers IA, graduates and facilitators of the season-long training on high value vegetable production, Hon. Rogelio J. Espina was represented by Gretchen Stephanie M. Espina, and Hon. Gerard Roger M. Espina was represented by Jeane Sanjorjo, the municipal livelihood coordinator. Rev. Fr. Eduardo M. Abanilla, the Parish priest, initiated the blessing of the family model farm project.

The project is one of the efforts of NIA Administrator Ricardo R. Visaya aimed to address issues on global warming and climate change through the adoption of crop diversification. (NIA-8)
