NAVAL, Biliran -- Nearby communities and agricultural products in Mapuyo, Kawayan town are now protected against flooding with the completion of the P20-M flood control project by the Department of Public Works and Highways – Biliran District Engineering Office (DPWH-BDEO).
The said project involves the construction of a 304 ln.m revetment structure with reinforced concrete facing. Before completion of the said project, the area is usually submerged with floodwater caused by typhoons and heavy rains.
According to District Engineer Ferdinand A. Briones, the inundation area is 1.28 sq. km. concentrated near the communities and agricultural products adjacent to the Mapuyo River.
“With the completed project, at least 1,300 households adjacent to the river will be protected against major floods and more or less 250 hectares of ricefields and various livestock are secured,” said Briones.
This year, DPWH-BDEO implemented a total of 11 flood control projects amounting to P185-M under its CY 2021 Flood Management Program. These projects were prioritized, if not to eradicate, at least minimize the effects and damage to lives and properties caused by flooding due to typhoons and heavy rains. (DPWH-BDEO)
