MANDALUYONG CITY -- The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) holds their annual National Moot Court Competition on International Humanitarian Law from October 18 to October 22 in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). This 2021 is the first year that the competition will have 15 law schools in attendance.
This is the second year that the competition will be held online due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, the University of the Philippines College of Law brought home the championship and represented the Philippines through the Red Cross in the International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition regional rounds which took place online last March 2022.
The winners will be representing the country in next year’s Asia-Pacific International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition which will be held in Hong Kong in March 2022.
The National Moot Court Competition on International Humanitarian Law provides a venue for law students to become acquainted with, and proficient on IHL issues, including related conventions, principles, and jurisprudence, as this is clearly of major concern to the lives of Filipinos. Furthermore, it offers an opportunity for students to practice and hone their skills in the art of argumentation, articulation, and advocacy with regard to International Humanitarian Law.
Chairman and CEO Senator Dick Gordon stressed “Let us be reminded of the old maxim of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, Inter arma, caritas (Among weapons, love) Per humanitatem, ad pacem (through humanity, for peace), and a call to always bear in mind that even wars have limits.” (Philippine Red Cross)
