BUTUAN CITY – Stakeholders from various sectors in Caraga region took their part in the celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disability (PWDs), which is celebrated around the globe every 3rd of December. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Caraga, through its Sectoral Unit, with other sectors united in commemorating this yearly celebration.
DSWD-Caraga regional director Ramel Jamen bared that the observance of the International Day of PWDs aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
“It seeks to increase awareness and advocate for the integration of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society and development,” he said.
Today, the world has adjusted itself to the “new normal," bringing about big changes to the lives of PWDs. This year's theme “Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world” highlighted the vital role of PWDs in creating an inclusive and accessible new normal for PWDs.
The theme also urged the Filipino people to empower PWDs to take the lead in policy formulation, implementation and advocacy for disability inclusion. (DSWD-Caraga/PIA-Caraga)
