QUEZON CITY -- The National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) enters into an agreement through a signing ceremony with nine (9) local government units (LGUs) to enhance the Country’s disability data collection through the Philippine Registry of Persons with Disabilities (PRPWD).
The LGUs include Doña Remedios Trinidad, Bulacan in Central Luzon; Balayan, Mabini, Pedro Garcia, and San Luis in Batangas Province in CALABARZON; Balete and Banga in Aklan; San Remigio, Antique; and Pilar, Capiz in Western Visayas.
The signing ceremony highlights the Country’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3, 2021. With the theme of the Celebration “Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world,” the same event recognizes the important role of LGUs in utilizing data as a crucial element in the promotion of well-being of persons with disabilities.
In the agreement, NCDA will deploy computers to the said LGUs to be used exclusively for the issuance of PWD-ID and uploading of disability database to the PRPWD which is being run by the Department of Health (DOH). The PRPWD is the national database on persons with disabilities which serves as repository of local disability databases and useful for policy and program development, including advocacy.
NCDA Executive Director Engr. Emerito L. Rojas led the ceremony, with concerned local chief executives (LCEs) and their representatives. Also present during the ceremony are heads and staff of LGUs’ Local Social Welfare and Development Office (LSWDO) and Persons with Disabilities Affairs Office (PDAO).
The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) estimates in 2010 that there are approximately 1.44 million persons with disabilities. Currently, the DOH recorded 423,382 persons with disabilities in the PRPWD system. (NCDA)
