Philippine Red Cross affirms its role for people caught in hostile conflicts

MANDALUYONG CITY -- As the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) celebrates its 75th anniversary in April, it affirms its role in helping people who are caught in the crossfire of war.

On January 6, 2009, the Philippine Red Cross, in coordination with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), was instrumental in the escape of 109 Filipinos from the war zone that was the Gaza strip. The humanitarian crisis was a result of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Gaza City. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) led the evacuation of foreigners from the Gaza, some of whom were Filipinos.

The PRC provided assistance to 70 Filipino nationals who were repatriated. Stress debriefing was conducted with anxious family members awaiting the return of their loved ones. Upon their arrival, the repatriates were given medical check-ups and counseling. PRC accommodated the repatriates and their families at the PNRC Hostel; food and welfare/hygiene kits were given to them. After their immediate needs were met, PRC assessed their long-term needs with psychosocial aid. The PRC also provided them with ambulance service, medical support, and transportation.

“The PRC continues to be at the forefront in alleviating human suffering and uplifting the dignity of Filipinos, especially the most vulnerable at all times, even in hostile situations,” says PRC Chairman and CEO, Senator Dick Gordon. (Philippine Red Cross )
