Philippine Red Cross urges Filipinos to take precautions

MANDALUYONG CITY -- The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) urges the public to be more cautious this summer season to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

“Ang heat stroke ay delikadong kondisyon, kaya ang bawat pamilyang Pilipino ay dapat na mag-ingat sa mga problema dulot ng sobrang taas ng temperatura,” PRC, led by Chairman and CEO Senator Dick Gordon, said.

According to a recent article published in the Journal of Intensive Care, there is no universally accepted definition of heatstroke, but it is a life-threatening condition. The Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries define heatstroke as “an illness with a high temperature and often loss of consciousness, caused by being in too great a heat for too long.”

Meanwhile, PAGASA recorded the highest heat index yet for this year on March 17, 2022 at 53 degrees Celsius in Dagupan City, Pangasinan.

Further,  the Department of Health says summer season during which Filipinos celebrate fiestas, travel for vacations, and get together with family and friends is also associated with food poisoning, diarrhea, and recreation-related injuries.

The following are tips from PRC to have a problem-free summer:

1. Stay hydrated and replenish water intake often. Drink water only from safe sources. If unsure, boil the water.
2. Wash hands frequently with soap and water. Maintain proper hygiene at all times.
3. Eat only well-cooked food since under-cooked food spoils quickly. Observe proper food handling and storage.
4. Eat more of fruits, vegetables, and other nutritious foods.
5. Apply sunscreen lotions with SPF 30 or greater for skin protection.
6. Use wide-brimmed hats and umbrellas when outdoors.
7. Wear light-colored cotton clothing. As much as possible, limit sun exposure from 11am until 3pm.
8. Try to do outdoor activities in the morning or in the late afternoon hours when it’s cooler.
9.Use mosquito repellent when needed.

10.Cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. When blowing your nose, do it gently.
11. Remember to avoid direct contact with persons you suspect to be infected.
