MANDALUYONG CITY -- Following the shooting incident at the Ateneo de Manila University on Sunday, July 24, that claimed the lives of at least three individuals, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) quickly provided eight (8) bags of blood to the Quirino Memorial Medical Center, where one of the affected individuals undergoes an operation.
“With the direction of Chairman and CEO Richard Gordon, the Philippine Red Cross quickly dispensed eight (8) bags of blood for the affected individuals,” said Dr. Christie Monina Nalupta, Director of the PRC’s National Blood Service.
The PRC cannot overstate the importance of having a well-stocked blood bank to provide safe, life-saving blood to those who need it, particularly in times of emergency like what happened in Ateneo.
“Four (4) units of packed red cells came from our Quezon City Chapter, while another four (4) units of platelet concentrates came from our National Headquarters’ Blood Center along EDSA in Mandaluyong,” added Dr. Nalupta.
The PRC has provided more than 40% of the country’s blood requirement, collecting 15,000 to 20,000 blood units a day from donors, so it always has a supply in its blood banks.
