MANILA -- President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Sunday bared the consensus among Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) members to support the One China Policy while urging China and Taiwan to resolve their dispute peacefully.
“Sinasabi, karamihan naman sa ’min, One China Policy. So sinasabi namin, ‘okay, we are still following the One China Policy but… we just want peace,’” President Marcos said of the ASEAN’s position, which he is backing.
The President made the statement during an interview with the media before meeting the Filipino community in Cambodia.
“We believe that Taiwan is part of China but you must resolve those issues peacefully. ‘Yun lang naman ang hinihingi ng ASEAN. Huwag magkagulo,” Marcos pointed out.
With regard to the South China Sea, the President said all parties, including China, said they will adhere to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the international law.
“So at least that position of ASEAN is clear,” Marcos said.
According to the President, that was the essential message to all involved, including their American counterpart, regarding the West Philippine Sea.
The One-China Policy is the diplomatic acknowledgment of the position held by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) that there is only a single sovereign state under the name China. (PND)
