DOST, PHIVOLCS, DPWH, and DLSU will launch the 3D Philippines Information System

The 3D Philippines Information System was developed to come up with a centralized database system for 3D visualization and analysis of surface and subsurface information. This initiative is led by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) and the De La Salle University (DLSU), in collaboration with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), monitored by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD).

The 3D Philippines Information System, an output of the 3D Philippines Program, is a web-based application, developed as a platform to provide researchers from national government agencies, local government units and other sectors a centralized database system for storing, accessing, and facilitating hazards and risk assessment of surface and subsurface information. The System complements GeoRiskPH in the management and analysis of scientific data to aid research, planning, and disaster risk reduction initiatives.

"One of the aims of 3D Philippines is to incorporate borehole information in the GeoRiskPH Platform so that researchers can see subsurface information and consequently determine subsurface conditions for geotechnical designs. With the borehole information integrated into the system, we get a three-dimensional view and this would be very useful to our engineers," emphasized by PHIVOLCS Officer-in-Charge, Dr. Teresito C. Bacolcol, during the soft launch of the 3D Philippines Information System.

"We would want to have an environment for researchers, palnners, and engineers to collaborate with each other in a 3D facility. We have envisioned establishing this 3D facility here in PHIVOLCS. Hopefully, in the future we would be able to have a system where users can maneuver objects in a virtual reality environment," highlighted by PHIVOLCS Supervising Science Research Specialist and 3D Philippines program leader, Mabelline T. Cahulogan.

For the public, 3D visualization will be made available in publicly accessible platforms namely the HazardHunterPH and the GeoAnalyticsPH. The platforms will also include the general location of boreholse, dsplayed at certain zoom levels, to inform concerned stakeholders on the availability of borehole information. The 3D Philippines strongly aligns with the government's effort towards digital transformation to streamline processes and mainstream hazards and risk assessments, among others. (DOST)
