Secretary Benjamin Abalos visited the Climate Change Commission’s booth for Local Climate Change Action Plan at League of Municipalities of the Philippines event

PASAY -- Secretary Benjamin "Benhur" Abalos, of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), graced the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) Annual General Assembly by his presence at the Grand Marriott Ballroom in Pasay City.

In his speech, Secretary Abalos underscored the importance of integrating climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts into local government plans and programs as part of the broader agenda of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He highlighted the need for collaborative efforts between national and local levels to mainstream and localize implementation strategies outlined in national plans, such as the Philippine Development Plan (PDP).

During the event, Secretary Abalos upholds the importance of leveraging available resources, such as the People's Survival Fund, to support local climate adaptation and resilience projects. He encouraged municipalities to take advantage of opportunities for capacity building and technical assistance provided by the Climate Change Commission.

The visit coincided with the dissemination of Joint Memorandum Circular (JMC) 1 s. 2018, which outlines guidelines for localizing the Philippine Development Plan (PDP) and SDGs. Secretary Abalos reaffirmed the DILG's commitment to supporting local governments in aligning their initiatives with national priorities and enhancing vertical linkages in planning and budgeting processes.

As Secretary Abalos concluded his visit, he emphasized the importance of fostering dialogue and collaboration between levels of government to strengthen climate resilience and promote sustainable development at the local level. (CCC)
