PAGASA hoists Signal No. 1 over several areas in Southern Luzon

QUEZON CITY (PIA) -- The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Wednesday, April 12, morning raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1 over the island province of Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Albay, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Ticao Island, Burias Island, the eastern portion of Laguna (San Pablo City, Rizal, Nagcarlan, Pila, Liliw, Magdalena, Majayjay, Luisiana, Cavinti, Pagsanjan, Santa Cruz, Lumban, Kalayaan, Paete, Pakil, Pangil, Siniloan, Famy, Santa Maria, Mabitac), Aurora, Quezon, and the eastern portion of Rizal (Tanay, Pililla, Jala-Jala).

Areas under Wind Signal No. 1 may experience strong winds (a strong breeze to near gale strength) which may cause minimal to minor impacts to life and property.

Persons living in these areas are advised to inspect their houses if necessary repair/fixing is needed; Clean up the drainage system; Harvest crops that can be yielded; and Monitor the latest Severe Weather Bulletin issued by PAGASA.

As of 7 am, the center of Tropical Depression ‘Amang’ was estimated based on all available data over the coastal waters of Virac, Catanduanes (13.4°N, 124.2°E) with maximum sustained winds of 45 kph near the center, gustiness of up to 55 kph, and a central pressure of 1004 hPa.

The provinces of Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, and Quezon can experience heavy rainfall for the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, the forecast accumulated rainfall for the next 3 days (from this morning to Saturday morning) is 50-100 mm over CALABARZON, Metro Manila, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, and the southern portion of Aurora.

Under these conditions, isolated flash floods and rain-induced landslides are possible, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps and in localities that experienced considerable amounts of rainfall for the past several days.

Further, the Gale Warning has been already lifted but in the next 24 hours, moderate to rough seas may be experienced over the eastern and southern seaboards of Southern Luzon with a wave height of 1.5 to 3.5 meters and the eastern seaboard of Central Luzon with a wave height of 1.5 to 2.8 meters.

Mariners of small seacrafts are still advised to take precautionary measures when venturing out to sea and, if possible, avoid navigating in these conditions.

For the next 36 hours, ‘Amang’ is forecast to track generally West-Northwestward which will bring its center over the Camarines Provinces, Lamon Bay, and mainland Quezon (with the possibility of passing near or over Polillo Islands).

It is forecast to weaken into a low pressure area by tomorrow, possibly earlier, due to the combined effects of land interaction, dry air intrusion, and increasing vertical wind shear.

The public and disaster risk reduction and management offices in the concerned areas are advised to take all necessary measures to protect life and property. Persons living in areas identified to be highly or very highly susceptible to hazards are advised to follow evacuation and other instructions from local officials. (KSAA – PIA CPSD with information from PAGASA)
