Wreaths for Rizal: How Ilocos Norte remember Rizal’s life

Patriotism. Heroism. Bravery.

These are the three words to describe the martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal in his goal to see his motherland free from foreign invasion and colonization.

He lived a life of devotion, love, and dedication just to see the freedom of the country until his very death on December 30, 1896.

Even after his heroic demise, his love for the country continues to be passed on from generation to generation.

The 125th commemoration of Rizal carries a theme “Rizal: Para sa Agham, Katotohanan, at Buhay.”

Some local government units in the province of Ilocos Norte honors the life and works of the National Hero through a wreath-laying ceremony led by their local chief executives, along with officials and employees of the LGUs.

“May this day become an opportunity for us, Filipinos, to reflect on his courage and patriotism, so that we may continue to manifest love for our country and build a society that is free, peaceful, and just,” said the provincial government in its social media page.

Meanwhile, in the town of San Nicolas, a blood donation activity was held with an aim to “enjoin Ilokanos to be part of the cause of having a safe, adequate, and supply of blood for our loved ones, families, friends, and community-folks.”

According to the local government, this is one way of doing small heroic acts to keep the world beating again with enough supply of blood especially for those who are in need.

Rizal’s life is a great reminder for this generation of young people to exemplify love for country, hold on to hope, and always respond with compassion.

One heroic deed makes a great impact for the country. May we always learn from Rizal. (JCR/MJAB, PIA Ilocos Norte)
