Vulnerable sector finds ray of hope at the KADIWA ng Pasko

QUEZON CITY, (PIA) – Who would ever thought that a flea market breathes a ray of hope for some of society’s sector?

That is what happened to the KADIWA ng Pasko, launched on Saturday in Manila.

KADIWA ng Pasko, is part of the initiative of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., who also serves as the Agriculture secretary, allows farmers and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to directly sell their products this Christmas season.

During the launch, we were able to meet with one 18-year old resident of the Marillac Hills, a National Training School for Girls providing temporary shelter and protective custody for girls and young women who are in need of social care and special protection.

The girl said some of the products that they make such as woven rugs, wallets, butter cookies, polvoron, carrot muffins, bed sheets, and fabric conditioners.

"Pinaghandaan po namin siya [KADIWA] ng maayos... gusto po namin hindi dahil sa mabenta po siya lahat, gusto po namin makatulong sa ibang tao na mapamura po 'yung bentahin," she said.

She said most of them at the facility tend to engage in making products as a way to fight boredom and loneliness for being away from their family.

As for her, she confided that she loves making butter cookies and fabric conditioner.

"Kasi po 'pag natapos ko po siya, ang sarap po sa pakiramdam na nakagawa po ulit... bukod sa nabenta ko 'yung sariling gawa ko, nakatulong pa po ako sa facility ng Marillac," she said.

She also confided that in 2019, she had been a victim of sexual exploitation, but was luckily rescued by the police.

She was brought to the National Training School for Girls where she learned a lot including how to develop her livelihood skills.

She started Grade 7 in Marillac Hills and now she is graduating in Senior High School, and plans to be a social worker in the future.

We were able to find out that sixty percent of the sales of products made by Marillac residents will go to the young women who made the products while, forty percent will be used as their revolving fund.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development - National Capital Region (DSWD-NCR) is one of the national agencies  that joined the KADIWA to showcase products made by the beneficiaries of their Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP), Rehabilitation Sheltered Workshop (RSW), and Marillac Hills.

The Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) is a capability-building program of DSWD for poor, vulnerable and marginalized households and communities to help improve their socio-economic conditions through accessing and acquiring necessary assets to engage in and maintain thriving livelihoods.

Some of the SLP products that were made available for sale are balut, itlog na maalat, and penoy. There are also multi-functional rugs made from recycled materials, to name just a few.

The Rehabilitation Sheltered Workshop (RSW) of DSWD-NCR, on the other hand, is a non-residential business-work facility that renders services to persons with disabilities (PWDs) through provision of employment opportunities.

Some metalworks and woodworks products made by PWDs are also made available at the KADIWA, like uniquely desiged plant metal stands, chair-convertible to iron stand, wooden racks, cloth pouches, and many more.

To bring fresh produce and local products at a lower prices closer to the people, the Department of Agriculture (DA) intends to hold KADIWA ng Pasko on all weekends of November. (pia-ncr)
