Know Aklan's iconic delicacies

The province of Aklan is more than just beaches and resorts!

Aside from the amazing and exceptional tourist spots in Aklan such as the world famous Boracay Island, the unexploited white sand and turquoise water beach of Hinugtan beach, and the natural springwater of Hurum-hurom Cold Spring, the province likewise offers delicious and delightful food trip experience.

As you explore the natural wonders of Aklan, you could likewise discover and enjoy the province's abundant culinary creations that surely will satisfy everyone's appetite as you could not refuse to take a bite.

One of the must Aklanon foods to savor is the Native Chicken Binakoe. This top local dish of Aklan has preserved the traditional way of cooking through the years that is why until now the way of cooking as well as its taste remains authentic.

The native chicken is cooked in a bamboo tube over a flaming charcoal for at least two and a half hours.

A famous vlogger, Jayvee Manikan, who had tasted the said Aklanon dish and even featured it in his vlog, described Binakoe as “nanunuot ang lasa at umaapaw ang aroma.” He compared Binakoe to Tinolang Manok but the former has a distinct taste that made it an authentic dish of Aklan.

Another unique dish in Aklan is Ubod Nipa. This dish is considered a unique cuisine of Aklan in terms of ingredients and taste. From its name, the main ingredient is ubod ng nipa (nipa palm pith) which is boiled in water to make it tender and lessen the bitter taste. It is thinly sliced and sauté in garlic and onions. Coconut milk, sugar, bread crumbs and other spices are then added.

In this modern time, some add condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs and crushed peanuts for sweeter, richer taste and bursting texture.

Next is Native Chicken Inubaran, which is considered as a signature dish of Aklan. As what many tourists and guests had said, this local dish should not be missed when visiting the province.

The main ingredients of this Aklan’s famous dish are native chicken, ubad ng saging (heart of banana stalk) and coconut milk. You could enjoy in this dish the tenderness of the native chicken and creaminess of the coconut milk and the bizarre texture of the ubad.

The Native Chicken Tinuom, a traditional and another Aklan’s pride dish. This is believed to be a century old dish of the province. Here in Aklan, particularly in Madalag, many variations of tinuom are offered. It could be native chicken, fish, vegetables, shrimp and other seafood.

Who could have not known Ramboy’s Liempo and Lechon Manok? Its popularity even branched out to other provinces such as Iloilo and Capiz. These dishes were also featured by the famous traveller and personality, Drew Arellano in his segment “Byahe ni Drew.”

The crunchiness and juiciness will surely not to be missed by Aklan’s visitors. Indeed it is Aklan’s best chicken and liempo.

Talaba, is one of the must to eat in Aklan.  There is a place in New Washington that is fondly called Talaba Village because all of the restaurant and carinderias in that venue offer talaba in different types of cooking.

You could have there steamed talaba or you may opt of kinilaw na talaba or the talabang sisig and relyenong talaba. All are must-try dishes of Talaba that could give you mouth-watering food experience.

The famous chorizo of Aklan should not be snubbed. The province is  truly home of best tasting chorizo. For how many years, Chorizo of Aklan has become the all-time favorite pasalubong to their love ones of anyone coming from Aklan.

Aklan Chorizo has become the main ingredient of the original and world famous choriburger in Kalibo and Boracay Island. This food is likewise a must to eat when you are in the province.

Ma. Theresa Descutido of Bacolod City, often visits the province of Aklan, and she still amazes with what Aklan could offer to her.

“Taga Bacolod man ako nga kung diin masiling ko nga damo manami nga pagkaon sa amon, pero mahambal ko gid nga kada kagto ko sa diri, damo mga katahum na mga lugar nga pwede mo kagtuan kag damo nga mga pagkaon kag putahe sa Aklan na manamit gid kag balik-balikan mo gid kan-on (I’m from Bacolod where a lot of different food could be offered, but I can say that everytime I go here, there are a lot of beautiful places that you could explore to and  so many food and dishes in Aklan that are so delicious that you could not resist to eat),” said Ma. Theresa.
