‘Togi’ and ‘Baat’, a  secret to long life?

(PIA) -The food that we eat play a major factor on our health. With various studies indicating that healthy diet and proper exercise help in greater physical health, this is apparently  true for two centenarians  in  Mountain  Province who were recently recognized by the provincial government.

Lola Angelina Dongonan Ag-a from  Soquib, Besao and   Lola Magdalena Bisoy Dida from  Tue, Tadian  who  turned 100 years old  this year  said  their secret  to having a long life is    eating “ube/togi” or sweet potato, and   “baat”  or banana in the local dialect.

The rootcrop   and banana are staple foods  that are   high in healthy carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, and fiber.

Governor Bonifacio C. Lacwasan Jr. visited Angelina Dongonan Ag-a in Soquib    and Magdalena Bisoy Dida in Tue on May 15 to personally award   the  plaque of recognition, a congratulatory  resolution  and P50,000 cash incentive  from the PLGU for their  reaching the age of 100 .

Lola Angelina, born on April 10,1923, despite having no children with her late husband, is considered a mother and grandmother by most of her relatives, and children around the community.

Still  with sharp memory and   strong  needing  no help to walk down the stairs of her home in Soquib, Ag-a shared some stories of her life during the Japanese War while crocheting.

“During the Japanese War, we helped our guerrillas by cooking food for them. I can clearly remember how some of them put chili on the stones that the Japanese soldiers used to clean their butts after defecating” Ag-a laughingly said.

Lola Magdalena is  also still  strong and  even capable to  go to the fields at least every other day.

Born in Sabangan,  she went to Aluling in Ilocos Sur to work during her younger  days and there she met her husband who is from Tue with whom she is blessed with six children.

The Governor congratulated the two  centenarians and encourages  people to “ strive for a healthy life and active lifestyle  to  live longer and avoid illnesses”.

The provincial government has institutionalized the Centenarian Award  thru Sangguniang Panlalawigan Ordinance No. 192.

In addition, under Republic  10868 or the Centenarians Act of 2016,  centenarians will also  receive 100,000.00 as gift from the national government through the Department of Social Welfare and Development  and a Letter of Felicitation from the President of the Philippines congratulating centenarian for his or her longevity.(JDP/CVBT-PIA CAR, Mountain Province)
