An epic culinary adventure: Lechon festival in Baroy showcases local pride

BAROY, Lanao del Norte (PIA)--The enchanting aroma of succulent lechons or roasted pigs filled the air, mingling with bursts of vibrant colors that adorned the streets of this town during the 16th Lechon Festival and 74th Araw ng Baroy.

This grand event transported attendees into a world of gastronomic delights, where 23 mouthwatering lechons took center stage, accompanied by captivating costumes and an array of thrilling activities that brought immense joy to everyone present.

The mouthwatering aromas and the sight of perfectly roasted lechons, each one a masterpiece of culinary excellence, enticed visitors as they strolled through the festival grounds. The crackling skin, with its irresistible golden hue, promised a symphony of flavors that would transport the taste buds to culinary heaven.

"Let this day also be a celebration of how far we have accomplished as a humble municipality with peace-loving people, and reflect on how much we can accomplish more as one united community," said Mayor Grelina Mantohac-Lim.

United in pride

In a spectacle that captured the imagination of all, the Lechon Festival in Baroy witnessed a burst of creativity as different barangays showcased their remarkable ingenuity through a myriad of costumes and props.

Lechons, the stars of the show, transformed into a  superhero adorned with a cape reminiscent of Superman, shimmered in traditional Filipiniana attire, and even embarked on a whimsical seafaring adventure, all adding a touch of magic and wonder to the festivities.

With fierce competition, Barangay Lindongan emerged victorious, claiming the coveted grand champion title and won  Best Lechon and Best Booth Design awards.

Barangay Poblacion secured 2nd place, earning the prestigious Best Exhibit Personnel Award. Meanwhile, Barangay Sto. Nino Village clinched 3rd place, while Barangay Manan-ao  grabbed  the Best Physical Arrangement Award.

"I did not expect that we would win. I have a lot of trust in my colleagues, and the person who cooked that lechon for us, who gave us victory today," said Ramel Quijano, chairperson of Barangay Lindongan.

Cultural feast

As the festival reached its climax, attendees were treated to a plethora of exciting activities. It challenged residents' appetites with the exhilarating 1-Kilo Lechon Eating Contest. As competitors devoured mouthwatering lechon in a race against time, cheers erupted, showcasing their voracious appetites and unwavering determination.

"I'm happy because this is my first time joining, and I won. I thank the Lord because, without Him, I can't do it. I prayed that He will help me," said Diosdado Bantilan, winner of the said competition.

Rhythm of wellness

The energetic Zumba session, led by renowned instructor Wowie de Guzman, brought together hundreds of participants, spreading the message of embracing a healthy lifestyle and celebrating the power of movement.

"We are doing Zumba sessions, especially now because, after the pandemic, more people have become conscious of being healthy.  My advocacy has been to travel all over the Philippines ever since I became a licensed zumba instructor," he said.

The Lechon Festival in Baroy transcended the boundaries of a mere culinary event. It was a grand celebration of the town's cultural heritage, creative spirit, and the culinary marvel that is lechon.
