Embracing green, open public spaces

The concept of open spaces is often tied with the Western culture. Folks convened for entertainment, politics, trade, and even worship.  Since then, it has become a huge part of their daily grind.

Open spaces may no longer be new ‘til this day, but these are subjects of the ever evolving rural and urban landscape.

Iloilo City, with its interesting sights and flavors, is no stranger to open spaces. Iconic plazas housed in the seven districts of the metro have been there from time immemorial. These plazas became key witnesses to several family affairs, milestones, cheers, and tears.

The birth of Iloilo City Esplanade was also one for the books. From its inception onwards to the construction of its ninth phase, the Esplanade has gone a long way. As a favorite sanctuary of Ilonggos and tourists alike, it is one of the best showcases of the city government’s efforts to revitalize and safeguard the Iloilo River and promote active lifestyle.

Soon, green renovation came one after the other.

The latest craze in the metro is decorated with lavish greenery and vibrant hues of floras. Once an abandoned desolate area, the Garden of Love grew into a lovely, flower park that melts the hearts of the young and old.

Nestled alongside the Commissioner Efrain B. Treñas boulevard covering the portion of Lapaz and Mandurriao districts, the Garden of Love was initiated by the Iloilo City Government Beautification Program to provide an additional relaxing open space for the public. What makes the place even more convenient is its accessibility to the metro’s social district and neighboring schools.

This project is under the WHEELS for Inclusive Development for the Environment, program of Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas. To note, WHEELS program stands for Welfare, Health and Sanitation, Education, Environmental Management, Livelihood, and Sustainability.

“Nakapaidalom sa akon W.H.E.E.L.S. for Inclusive Development ang aton mga programa sa Environment gani, padayon ang aton pagpananom sa mga pampubliko nga lugar sa ciudad,” Mayor Treñas expressed in his Facebook post.

Planting efforts became a huge hit especially in the Garden of Love with its additional Milkweed plants and Yellow Celosias. These blooming flowers and greenery are also credited to boost mental health.

With its picturesque beauty, visitors held photo shoots and even garden-related trainings. Kids, meanwhile, have the best time laughing, playing, and exploring the wonders of nature. More than an attraction, the garden is a tribute of the hard working Ilonggos and their love for the environment.

Award-winning architect Paulo Alcazaren, on the other hand, noted the value of these open green spaces meant for public consumption.

“What’s important in the design of these public spaces is for the ease of society - for recreation, for romance, economics, and also for heritage conservation,” Alcazaren shared during one of his talks held in Iloilo City.

Alcazaren, who is also known for his handiwork in the realization of Iloilo Esplanade, linked urban green spaces to sustainable development.

According to him, Iloilo City, with its rational land use planning and good governance, paved the way to improving the transport system along with pedestrian and bike-focused infrastructure, and a wealth of plazas, parks, and open green spaces.

While progress entails the sprouting of urban cityscapes, it also translates to creating unique, beautiful spaces for people to enjoy, ponder, and refresh out of the hurly-burly of the city life.

Open green spaces are not fully dependent on the creative minds of architects, engineers, and urban planners. It goes beyond how people adopt, utilize, and manage the green spaces well, thereby, balancing the comfort of rural and urban living. (AAL/LMLE/PIA Iloilo)
