Nature’s Unspoiled Gem: Discovering the Magnificence of Mt. Guiting Guiting

In celebration of the 50th Founding Anniversary of the Department of Tourism (DOT) and its new tagline “Love The Philippines,” the DOT Mimaropa, led by Regional Director Zeny Pallugna, and the Provincial Government of Romblon led by Governor Jose Riano recently embarked on a climb  to  Mt. Guiting Guiting to promote mountain tourism in the country.

Mt. Guiting Guiting, also known as G2, is a majestic mountain situated on Sibuyan Island in the province of Romblon. Rising impressively to a height of 2,058 meters above sea level, it stands as one of the most challenging and highly desired peaks for mountaineers and adventure enthusiasts.

Renowned for its rugged terrain and sharp slopes, Mt. Guiting Guiting is often referred to as a "knife-edged peak" due to its unique formation. The mountain is predominantly composed of granite, resulting in steep cliffs and jagged summits. These distinctive features attract experienced climbers in search of a rigorous and thrilling experience.

Pallugna emphasized that hiking the mountain, with an elevation of 6,752 ft., necessitates physical preparedness due to its steep slopes, jagged peaks, and rocky hills, all of which require agility, stamina, and a sense of adventure. The use of proper equipment is crucial for overcoming the obstacles that lie ahead.

Geologically, Mt. Guiting Guiting holds great significance. Its composition of granite  is thought to have originated  from intense volcanic activity that took place millions of years ago. Its location on Sibuyan Island makes it a valuable site for studying the tectonic interactions between the Eurasian Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate. The mountain's formation and geological history provide valuable insights into the dynamic processes shaping the Earth.

"Kasi malaki talaga 'yung potential ng Mt. Guiting-Guiting sa ganitong tourism. Actually, we have a lot of mountain guides na, I think nasa 35 [mountain guides] or even more. Isa rin sa purpose namin is to see what kind of development we have to do to promote the Mountain as a tourist attraction," said Pallugna.

In addition to its  geological significance, Mt. Guiting Guiting is also renowned for its rich biodiversity. The mountain harbors a diverse range of animal and plant species  which can only be found in its surroundings. Rare and endemic species such as the Sibuyan pitcher plant (Nepenthes sibuyanensis) and the Sibuyan striped rat (Chrotomys sibuyanensis) depend on the mountain's unique ecosystem for survival. This ecological diversity highlights the need for conservation efforts to protect Mt. Guiting Guiting and its inhabitants.

Moreover, Pallugna said that aspiring hikers should prioritize sustainable and responsible practices when venturing on the mountain. By practicing proper waste disposal and respecting the local flora and fauna, hikers can contribute to the preservation of Mt. Guiting Guiting.

"Plastics should be restricted if climbing the mountain. Then the trash, you should also bring it back. We have to protect the environment by also educating the guides, and having responsible tourists. By doing this, we can ensure that the beauty of the mountain, including the flora and fauna, will be preserved," Pallugna further said.

Culturally, Mt. Guiting Guiting holds a special place in the hearts of the local communities residing in Sibuyan Island. It is considered a sacred site by the indigenous Mangyan people, who believe that the mountain is the dwelling place of their ancestral spirits. The Mangyan's cultural connection to the mountain underscores the importance of preserving not only its natural wonders but also the intangible heritage that surrounds it.

Recognizing the importance of conservation, numerous organizations and government entities have been actively involved in protecting Mt. Guiting Guiting.  Their collective efforts focus on sustainable tourism, education programs, and the establishment of protected areas. A notable organization is the Sibuyan Island Sentinels League for Environment Inc. (Sibuyan ISLE), a non-governmental organization dedicated to advocating for the preservation of the island's natural resources, including Mt. Guiting Guiting. These initiatives ensure the long term survival of this remarkable natural wonder, allowing future generations to enjoy its beauty and significance.  (PJF/GATS/PIA Mimaropa)
