Palace Commends Triumphant Victories in the 32nd SEA Games and 12th ASEAN Para Games

With the Philippines continued triumphant feat at the sporting world, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s administration is very much elated and expressed its recognition to the athletes who displayed unwavering determination, skill, and sportsmanship, bringing glory to the nation as the country achieved great success during the 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and the 12th ASEAN Para Games held recently in Cambodia.

32nd SEA Games Triumph

The Filipino athletes showcased their prowess, securing a staggering total of 58 gold medals, 86 silver medals, and 116 bronze medals across various sports. This impressive performance propelled the Philippines to the fifth spot in the overall medal tally.

The Filipino athletes gave their best, excelling in disciplines such as athletics, swimming, gymnastics, boxing, and many others. Their outstanding performances not only won medals but also captured the hearts of their “kababayans”, especially those who are in Phnom Penh, instilling a sense of national pride and unity.

The 32nd SEA Games was a testament to the Philippines' commitment to sports excellence. The event brought together more than 6,000 athletes from all over Southeast Asia, showcasing the region's rich sporting culture and providing a platform for friendly competition and camaraderie.

12th ASEAN Para Games Triumph

Following the success at the SEA Games, the Philippines continued to shine at the 12th ASEAN Para Games also held in Cambodia from 3 to 9 June 2023. The country's para-athletes exhibited exceptional skill and determination, securing an impressive medal haul.

The Philippines' para-athletes triumphed in various events, including athletics, swimming, power lifting, wheelchair basketball, and chess, among others. Their hard work and dedication paid off as they clinched a remarkable tally of 34 gold, 33 silver, and 50 bronze medals, making the country proud.

The success of the Philippine delegation at the 12th ASEAN Para Games was a testament to their indomitable spirit and resilience. These para-athletes not only conquered physical challenges but also shattered barriers and inspired others with their remarkable achievements.

National support and recognition

The achievements of the Filipino athletes in both the 32nd SEA Games and the 12th ASEAN Para Games were made possible through the unwavering support of the Filipino people.

The success of the athletes has also brought them well-deserved recognition as the President himself gave them tribute. Just this Wednesday (August 9, 2023), the outstanding performers have been honored and was given cash incentives in a simple ceremony at the Malacanan Palace. Their achievements have not only elevated their personal careers but also inspired future generations of Filipino athletes to strive for excellence.

But I think the most important thing that you demonstrated as you competed in these tournaments, in these games was to show the strength of the Filipino spirit, the grace of the Filipino character, and the passion of the Filipino heart. And that is what comes out with the results with what you have been able to do with admittedly, limited resources,” President Marcos said in his message.

The President recognizes the shortcomings of the government in terms of support to the athletes, their training, their coaches and even to their families. But he said his administration will do its part and will create a plan that will help enhance the system that will support the athletes and all the parts of their team, from coaches, nutritionists up to the drivers.

He guaranteed that his administration would be in full support to all the members of Team Philippines as part of the government’s way of paying back their sacrifices and hard work. This is also to give inspiration for them to continue performing with excellence in future sporting events and to continue to give honor to the country.

Kaya’t asahan ninyo na sa administrayon na ito ay gagawin natin ang lahat para masuportahan natin at ipalabas natin ang kagalingan, ang husay ng ating atleta para makita…,” President Marcos said.

Olympiads continue to give honor to the country

Athletes such as Ernest John "EJ" Obiena (athletics), Carlos Yulo (men’s gymnastics), Carlo Paalam (boxing), and Nesthy Petecio (women’s boxing) with SEA Games veteran Agatha Wong (Wushu) continue to dominate the medal standings on this latest sports event. Each had bag themselves a gold medal, showing their more profound expertise on their fields.

A legacy of sporting excellence

The Philippines' outstanding performance at the 32nd SEA Games and the 12th ASEAN Para Games is a testament to the nation's commitment to sporting excellence. The athletes' dedication, skill, and sportsmanship have brought immense pride to the country and united the Filipino people.

These achievements serve as a legacy, inspiring future generations to pursue their sporting dreams and continue the tradition of excellence. As the nation celebrates the success of its athletes, it also looks forward to future sporting events, where the Filipino spirit will undoubtedly shine once again.
