Tadek Festival of Nueva Era showcases Ilocos Norte’s culture to Davaoenos

The Tadek Festival of Nueva Era has showcased the Ilocos Norte’s culture to the Davaoenos in the recently-concluded Kadayawan Festival, known to be the festival of festivals, in Davao City.

Davaoenos were in awe as they witnessed the remarkable and captivating Tadek Festival of Nueva Era. For the very first time, they had the chance of experiencing this unique and beautiful ceremonial dance performance up close and personal. The Tadek Festival is a vibrant portrayal of Nueva Era's rich culture, capturing the essence of their traditions associated with victory, burial, and marriage.

Traditionally, its performers use the rhythmic sounds of the tambor and gangsa to create the enchanting dance music that accompanies their performance.

The use of the "allap," a cloth delicately held at the tips of the fingers by the dancers, added allure to the dance. As the performers swayed and moved to the music, the allap becomes an extension of their expression. This artful dance form captures not only the eye but also the heart, conveying emotions and stories through the grace of movement and the gentle manipulation of the cloth. The symbolism embedded in their choreography beautifully mirrors the call for the protection and preservation of the environment.

The Tadek Festival of Nueva Era representing the Tan-ok Ni Ilocano Festival of Festivals, participated in the Kadayawan Festival’s Indak-Indak sa Kadawayan on August 19, 2023, as a non-competing contingent.

The Tan-ok Ni Ilocano Festival of Festivals is an organization of 22 different festivals from the different municipalities in the province. It was first organized in 2011 by then Governor and now Senator, Imee Marcos, as part of the campaign to revive cultural pride and Ilocano identity.

Sen. Marcos, chair of the Philippine Senate Cultural Communities Committee, graced and witnessed the street dancing competition Indak-Indak.

“Ilocos Norte had indeed come to San Pedro Square to share our culture of freedom-loving people of independence and fearlessness,” the Senator proudly stated.

Sen. Marcos also shared that the people of Ilocos and Davao shared a common goal - they both want to preserve the bravery and independence of their ancestors, culture and heritage.

Christian Mark Espiritu, the Festival Director of Tan-ok Ni Ilocano, said in an interview that the participation of their team is primarily to show their culture to the Davaoenos.

“We would like to show to Davaoenos and to the whole world what Ilocano culture is all about, specifically those indigenous people in Ilocos Norte,” Espiritu said.
