Empowering Futures: PIA-CAGPIO back-to-school drive

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) — It is the back-to-school season and children prepare to return to school. The air is indeed filled with enthusiasm and expectations. However, this time can be stressful for many families because spending on school supplies might be too expensive.

The Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Capiz Information Center in Western Visayas, through its supervised organization of Information Officers both in local and national government agencies and the PAMANA organization, has donated school supplies to 302 elementary pupils of Victor A. Umiten Memorial School (VAUMS) in Barangay Basiao, Ivisan town.

A total of 302 pupil from Victor A. Umiten Memorial school received school supplies from PIA Capiz Association of Government Public Information Officers last August 25, in Brgy. Basiao, Ivisan, Capiz.
Aside from the gift-giving of school supplies, the PIA-CAGPIO also conducted an information drive or Hinun-anon to the parents.

Aside from giving school supplies, the Capiz Association of Government Public Information Officers (CAGPIO) members also conducted an information drive dubbed as “Hinun-anon” for the parents of the pupils.

The PIA-CAGPIO Hinun-anon helps guarantee that the locals in remote barangays may learn about the government programs and activities, and empower the citizens to be informed individuals.

The Brgy. Basiao in Ivisan town is a community of fisherfolk, talaba and tahong growers, and dried fish vendors, however some of them have no other means of livelihood and they just fit their daily needs from a meager income.

Aizell Valdisimo Andap, a 36-year-old housewife of a fisherman, said that their wages are not enough to buy school supplies for her kid especially now that they are suffering from red tide, the reason why she is grateful to the PIA-CAGPIO for the free school supplies.

“Ang iban nga kwarta para sa school supplies sang puya namon, ma-apply namon sa iba namon nga expenses, sa ila balon kag sa mga adlaw-adlaw nga kinahanglanon sa eskwelahan (The money intended to buy school supplies for our children can be used for other expenses and their daily needs in school),” Andap stated.

Andap is also happy that the members of PIA-CAGPIO conducted Hinun-anon because it is expensive for them to go to Roxas City just to convey their concerns to the government agencies.

“Gapasalamat kami sa mga ahensya nga ari diri sila para maghatag sa amon sang ideya kung ano ang amon himuon kag dapat paga ubrahon. Ingkaso magkadto kami sa ila ahensya, indi na kami mabudlayan kay na educate na kami diri (We are thankful to the agencies who are here, educating us on what to do in case we need to visit them),”Andap added.

On behalf of the pupils of VAUMS, John Andrie Montuya, a grade 6 student, is filled with gratitude to the PIA-CAGPIO and PAMANA organization.

“Kami nagapasalamat gid sa mga grasya nga amon na baton para sa bulig sa amon mga kinahanglanon sa amon pag-eskwela (We are grateful for the blessing that we received and for the help for our school needs),” Montuya said.

He is hopeful that there will be more activities and programs from other organizations like this that will help more students in need like him.

For his part, the PIA-Capiz Infocen Manager said that aside from the pupils of VAUMS the teacher and staff of the school also received two sets of computers, a scanner, science books, and other school supplies and equipment from the Department of Science and Technology.

Further, VAUMS School Head Sergio B. Baranda is delighted with the school supplies and equipment that his pupils and teachers received from the PIA-CAGPIO and PAMANA.

Pupils feel more secure in the classroom when they have the necessary supplies. It enables students to take good notes, finish assignments, and participate in classroom activities, which can improve a student's academic success, he noted.

This initiative will result in higher school attendance and class involvement.

Likewise, this endeavor helps to develop a feeling of pride among kids. It demonstrates how a tiny act of kindness may have a large and long-lasting impact.
