Clearing the Air: How World Car-Free Day Could Prevent Haze and Smog in Metro Manila

Amidst the ever-expanding urban landscape of Metro Manila, an annual global event has been gaining ground, that could serve as a breath of fresh air, quite literally, for the National Capital Region.

Each year, around September 22, cities worldwide come together to celebrate World Car-Free Day, encouraging motorists to park their cars for a day and embrace more sustainable modes of transportation. The movement not only paints a picture of what our cities could look like without cars but also sheds light on a critical issue - preventing the occurrence of haze and smog in our bustling metropolis.

A Brief History of World Car-Free Day

The roots of this global movement date back to 1956, but it wasn't until September 2000 that the first official global Car-Free Day was established. Carbusters, now known as the World Carfree Network, played a pivotal role in launching and promoting this environmental advocacy. Initially driven by the oil crisis in Europe, the movement has since evolved into a mission to reclaim our streets from the clutches of cars and reduce their detrimental effects on our environment.

The Power of a Car-Free City

World Car-Free Day serves as an eye-opening illustration of what our cities could be without the constant presence of cars. On this day, cities worldwide encourage residents to ditch their automobiles in favor of walking, cycling, using public transportation, and other sustainable modes of travel. It provides a tangible glimpse of cleaner and quieter urban spaces while highlighting the significance of reducing cars on our streets.

Ways to Take Part in World Car-Free Day

Here are creative ways to participate in World Car-Free Day and contribute to the prevention of haze and smog in Metro Manila:

  • Choose Sustainable Transportation: Leave your car at home and opt for eco-friendly alternatives like bicycles or public transport for your daily commute. By doing so, you can help alleviate traffic congestion and reduce air pollution, key contributors to haze and smog.
  • Embrace Unconventional Transportation: Think outside the box and explore unconventional modes of transportation. Scooters, skates, or skateboards not only offer a cool vibe but also contribute to cleaner air.
  • Prioritize Physical Activity: Instead of driving, consider walking around your neighborhood or to your workplace if it's within walking distance. Incorporating exercise into your daily routine not only benefits your health but also reduces the need for short car trips.
  • Support Local Businesses: Instead of driving to distant malls, walk or cycle to the nearest local shops. This sustainable choice not only supports your community but also reduces traffic-related emissions.
  • Connect with Nature: Escape the confines of shopping malls and opt for the tranquility of parks. Spend quality time outdoors with friends and family, breathing in the pollution-free air that World Car-Free Day offers.
  • Explore Car-Free Zones in Metro Manila: Several cities in Metro Manila are actively participating in World Car-Free Day by closing certain roads to cars. Join the festivities and enjoy outdoor activities without the interference of automobiles.

Metro Manila Cities Leading the Way

Several cities in Metro Manila are paving the path toward cleaner air and a car-free future. Here are a few notable examples:

Pasig City

Known for its continuous "Peoples Street," Pasig City temporarily closes several roads every Sunday, inviting residents to engage in activities such as cycling, jogging, and leisurely strolls. This initiative not only fosters a sense of community but also reduces local air pollution.

Navotas City

The City of Navotas established a Family Zone in 2018, closing a part of the southbound lane of R10 every Sunday from 5:00 am to 8:00 am. This measure provides residents with a dedicated space for jogging, walking, biking, and other activities, contributing to a cleaner and healthier urban environment.

Makati City

Makati City invites everyone to enjoy car-free Sunday mornings on Ayala Avenue throughout September. By temporarily closing Ayala Avenue to cars, people have the opportunity to engage in various outdoor activities such as cycling, walking, and jogging, all while reducing vehicular emissions.

As we prepare to celebrate World Car-Free Day, let's reflect on the positive impact it can have on our cityscape and the prevention of haze and smog in Metro Manila. By embracing sustainable transportation alternatives and supporting car-free initiatives, we can collectively work toward a greener, healthier, and haze-free future for our beloved metropolis.
