Discovering Mt. Timolan: where biodiversity and community thrive together

Nestled within the peaceful municipality of Tigbao lies a natural gem that has been preserved for generations to come. The Mount Timolan Protected Landscape (MTPL) stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of nature and community, offering not only captivating views but also a sustainable way of life for the people of Tigbao.

The MTPL is a testament to nature's resilience and the unwavering commitment of local communities. In 1992, Tigbao faced a pivotal moment when it successfully halted rampant illegal logging activities within its boundaries. This triumph marked the beginning of a local conservation initiative that would eventually garner national recognition.

The turning point came with the enactment of the National Integrated Protected Area System (NIPAS) Act of 1992 (RA 7586), which paved the way for the declaration of MTPL as a provincial park under the Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Government's Regulatory Ordinance No. 2, series of 1992. Subsequently, Presidential Proclamation 354 in 2000 conferred national recognition upon this pristine area, solidifying its status as a protected landscape.

The MTPL offers a rich variety of natural wonders—verdant forests, meandering rivers, crystal-clear springs, and captivating waterfalls punctuate the landscape. At its heart lies the enchanting Lake Maragang, a heart-shaped crater lake, that serves as the epicenter of the region's rainforest and biodiversity.

A Symphony of Wildlife

The MTPL is more than a sanctuary; it is a stage for nature's most exquisite performances. Within its confines, one can encounter a rich array of wildlife. Monkeys swing through the treetops, while wild pigs roam the forest floor. Tarsiers, lemurs, and palm civets silently move through the foliage, sharing their habitat with the elusive leopard cat and inquisitive squirrel.

Birdwatchers will find their paradise here, with raptors such as the serpent and Philippine hawk-eagle soaring overhead. The skies are adorned with the brahminy kite, honey buzzard, osprey, and the diminutive Philippine falconet. Doves, pigeons, woodpeckers, and many other endemic birds complete this avian orchestra.

Preservation and Prosperity

The MTPL is not just about conservation; it's about creating opportunities for the people of Tigbao. As the region came together to protect this sanctuary, it also forged new paths for livelihood and employment. Barangay Limas, in particular, has benefited greatly from the influx of visitors, who are drawn by the promise of eco-adventure and the beauty of Lake Maragang.

Facilities such as the solar-powered eco-lodge, A-frame log cabin, and multi-purpose hall have been established to cater to the needs of visitors. The park offers amenities like kayaks, picnic sheds, diving boards, a "Tarzan Swing," and slides, ensuring a memorable experience for all. Solar street lamps illuminate the foot trails, allowing guests to explore the park even after dark.

A Call to Conserve

Mount Timolan Protected Landscape serves as an example of what can be achieved when communities unite to conserve their natural heritage. It is a testament to the idea that ecological preservation and economic prosperity can go hand in hand, benefiting both nature and its stewards.

Rebecca S. Cubio, a local resident and the president of the Tour Guide Association in MTPL, conveyed her appreciation, stating, “Nagpasalamat ako sa DENR, sa mga official, nga naapil ko diring dapita nga dako kaayo ug katabang sa akong pamilya (I thank the DENR, the officials, that I was included in this place, which is a great help to my family),” she said.

Furthermore, Regional Executive Director Arturo Fadriquela of DENR-9 believed that with the active cooperation of the LGU and local communities, they can gain both the protection of the environment and the empowerment of the local community.

As you gaze upon the heart-shaped Lake Maragang, remember that this unique landscape is not only a reflection of nature's grandeur but also a symbol of the love and dedication of the people of Tigbao. It calls upon us all to stand as guardians of our planet's precious resources, working hand in hand to ensure that future generations can continue to marvel at the wonders of Mount Timolan and its impact on the people of Tigbao.
