Cancer is now the third leading cause of illness and death in the Philippines, accounting for 1 out of every 10 deaths, the third highest cause of mortality after heart and vascular diseases. In data released by the Philippine Society of Medical Oncology in 2023, there were 184 cases diagnosed in 100,000 patients and 96 deaths related to cancer were reported daily in the country.

Receiving a cancer diagnosis has a major emotional and financial impact on patients and families. Children battling cancer especially need abundant love and support as they undergo treatment.

Recognizing this need, the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), the grassroots development communications arm of the Marcos administration, recently reached out to the cancer ward at the National Children's Hospital in Quezon City. The agency, together with the MW Jolly R. Bugarin Masonic Lodge No. 468, aimed to uplift young patients as they cope with the challenges of childhood cancer.

The team brought not only gifts for the child “warriors,” but also a beacon of hope – a testament to the enduring spirit of humanity in the face of childhood cancer.

The event also went beyond gift-giving, as the children were entertained by the PIA Puppet Group. In addition to providing an entertaining afternoon for the children and families, the team also donated essential items.

The team aimed to uplift the young cancer patients' spirits while also meeting tangible needs.

A disease should not define a person. These young patients faced confinement within hospital walls, missing out on a joyful childhood. It is important they know they are not alone.
