TUBO, Abra (PIA) -- More geographically isolated and depressed areas are being reached under the “People’s Day” program of the provincial government which aims to bring the basic services of the government closer to the people.
The latest People’s Day activity was held in June 29 in Barangay Alangtin, one of the farthest barangays of the municipality. From the capital town of Bangued, it takes two hours to reach the municipal hall of Tubo in Barangay Mayabo then another two hours of travel over unpaved road to reach Alangtin.
Governor Jocelyn Bernos led a dialogue with barangay officials, Tinggian elders and the residents regarding their concerns that include insurgency. Philippine Army’s 7th Infantry Division BGen. Krishnamurti Mortela, 24th Infantry Battalion Commanding Officer LTC. Ulysis Laude and Abra Police Provincial Director Christopher Acop were with the Governor in responding to the peace and order issues.
Some provincial offices of national government agencies and offices of the provincial government also brought their services which were availed by the residents of Alangtin and its neighboring barangay for free. These services included dental check-up, haircut, skin consultation, distribution of free medicines, among others.
The provincial government also opened a community pantry for the basic needs of the locals especially inthis timeof Covid-19 pandemic since public transportation in the area is limited.
The Provincial Fishery Office –Abra also distributed 20,000 tilapia fingerlings to 40 fisherfolks who each received one bag containing 500 pieces of tilapia fingerlings.
Other agencies that supported the event are the Department of the Interior and Local Government, Dept. Trade and Industry, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, Dept. of Education, National Commission on Indigenous Peoples, Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources Offices and Philippine Information Agency.
“This is such a big event because the needs of the locals are met. This is considered as a successful one because the services are now experienced in this far flung area,” Mayor Guilbert Ballangan said. (JDP/Christian Allister G. Tubadeza – PIA CAR, Abra)
