NIA to open two big projects in Pangasinan

DAGUPAN CITY, June 6 (PIA) - -   The National Irrigation AdminIstration (NIA)  in Region I is set to inaugurate the Butao Hydroelectric Plant in Brgy. Butao, San Manuel town in Pangasinan on July 8. 


NIA Regional Manager Angelito Miguel said the 135-megawatt plant is one of the hydropower projects being pursued by NIA in partnership with private corporations in a continuous effort to support the administration of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte. 


“We want to provide renewable energy sources that will not only boost the income-generating capacity of NIA but also contribute to the provision of affordable electricity in far-flung communities,” Miguel told the Philippine Information Agency. 


The hydroelectric plant will be under the management of the Mindoro Grid Corporation. 


Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi and NIA Administrator Ricardo Visaya are expected to grace the event. 


The following day, July 9, the National Irrigation Sector Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (NSRIP) at the San Fabian River Irrigation System (SFRIS)  shall have its ceremonial inauguration in San Fabian town.

Engr. Gaudencio De Vera, chief of the Pangasinan Irrigation Management Office (PIMO),  said the P150-million project  which rehabilitated the antiquated Binday Dam, serves as a major source of irrigation in the towns of San Jacinto, Manaoag and San Fabian. 


“The system will be managed by the Pangasinan IMO in partnership with the farmers and irrigators group,” Engr De Vera said.


Officials from Japan Embassy and Japan International Cooperation Agency  (JICA) will join the activity. (JCR/VHS/PIA Pangasinan)
