Davao City Bike Lane Network formally opened

DAVAO CITY, July 21 (PIA)-  The 54.74 kilometer Metro Davao Bike Lane Network was formally opened via a virtual inauguration held on July 20.

The virtual ceremony was attended by Department of Tranportation Secretary Art Tugade, Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar and Davao City Mayor Sara Z. Duterte-Carpio.

Stretching across 14 road sections in Davao City, the Metro Davao Bike Lane Network was completed on June 15 of this year.

The bike lane  features white and green pavement markings lit by solar-powered road studs signages, bollards, bike symbols, and concrete delineators to ensure the bikers’ safety.

The bike lane network had  a budget of P145.37 million and is funded by the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act of 2020 (RA 11494), the project aims to connect Davao’s key activity areas, through enhancing their accessibility, and providing the most vulnerable road users with safe transport infrastructure.

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio thanked the various government agencies which helped realized the project, the DoTr, DPWH and the Mindanao Development Authority.

“By providing Davaoeños with bicycle lanes, they are able to safely maximize usage of their bicycles, whether as a mode of transportation for work or business, or as a means for exercise and leisure activities.” The Mayor said.

Sec. Art Tugade of the DoTr said that the department’s paramount priority to ensure the safety and welfare of all road users, road-based transport initiatives such as the establishmenr of bike lane networks was pursued.

“Sa Kagawaran ng Transportasyon, pinapahalagahan po natin ang buhay ng lahat, lalo na sa daan. Kaya nga ba’t sa pamamagitan nitong mga bike lanes na ito, masiguro ang inyong kaligtasan, pagkat ito ay mayroong pavement markings, physical separators at road signages,” Sec. Tugade said

Sec. Tugade enjoined cyclists to use the bike lanes properly with respect and courtesy.

Meanwhile Sec. Villar of the DPWH underlined the long-term benefits of the bike lane which will also positively impact the overall traffic system of the city.

“We are optimistic, that the project will not only provide safety and convenience for road users, but also encourage the use of bicycles as a healthier and more environment-friendly alternative. Apart from the convenience and safety for bikers, the construction of bike lanes also help in decongesting traffic as less people will have more options in their daily commute,” Sec. Villar said.

Several cyclists conveyed their appreciation to the creation of the bike lanes which has provided them with a safer and convenient biking experience.

“Mafeel namo na ensure ang among pagdagan sa kalsada, kaning bike lanes dugang ni na tabang mahatagan mig insurance na naay directionang among pagdagan diri sa kalsada, (We feel safe when we traverse the roads, these bike lines are added help in giving us directions while we are biking along the roads), says Glenn Lagare, biker who works as a teacher said of the new bike lanes.

Several government officials who were also present during the virtual event, these included; DOTr OIC-Undersecretary for Finance Giovanni Lopez, Assistant Secretary Mark Steven Pastor, Land Transportation Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Chairman Martin Delgra III, MRT-3 OIC-General Manager Assistant Secretary Eymard Eje, Assistant Secretary for Communications and Commuters Affairs Goddess Hope Libiran, Min Development Authority (MinDA) Assistant Secretary Romeo Montenegro, DPWH 11 Regional Director Rey Peter B. Gille, LTFRB 11 Regional Director Nonito A. Llanos III.

Other representatives from the DPWH, cyclist organizations, and the local government unit of Davao and members of the media were also present at the virtual event. (PIA/RG Alama)
