DOH-CAR, Baguio CHSO raise dengue alert as cases rise

 

BAGUIO CITY (PIA) - - The Department of Health reminds the public anew to clean possible mosquito breeding sites in their homes and surroundings and protect themselves from Dengue as cases are on the rise.

DOH – Cordillera  Entomologist Alexander Baday, in the PIA Cordillera- led Kapihan media forum on Thursday,  reported  that  1,171 dengue cases  were recorded in the region from January 1 to July 10. The figure  is 76 percent higher compared to the 664 cases recorded during the same period last year.

There are also  seven  death cases (5 from Baguio City and 2 from Benguet) recorded compared to the two last year, Baday added.

 Per geographical area, Benguet has the  highest cases,  followed by Baguio City.

The Baguio City Health Services Office(CHSO)  issued a public health advisory against Dengue as the 416 cases recorded from January to July 17 this year  show  a  three - fold increase compared to the 103 cases recorded during the same period last year.  The five deaths recorded were two females  aged 18 and 65 years old  and three males (11,15 and 30 years old).

 City Epidemiologist Dr. Donnabel Tubera – Panes  said  Dengue cases in Baguio   involve   both young and old,   with  ages  ranging  from  8 months old to 90 years old.

Panes said dengue  cases  in the city suddenly peaked in June with more than 200. Clustering of cases is also noted in 19 barangays in the city from June 20 to July 15.

Baday  thus   reiterated  to the  public   the  4S against Dengue -  Seek and destroy possible Dengue mosquito sites, Self – protection, Seek Early Consultation and Say yes to fogging only if deemed  necessary.

As  the COVID - 19 pandemic confines most people at home and community gatherings are  discouraged, it is now up to  individuals and families  to seek and clean mosquito breeding sites in their homes and surroundings.

With flowers, ornamental plants and vegetable home gardening also getting popular, he also advised people to make sure that there is no stagnant water  in their gardens. (JDP/CCD-PIA CAR)
