DAGUPAN CITY, July  28 (PIA)  -  Voting population in Pangasinan has breached the 2-million mark in the latest number of registrants, according to the Commission on Elections (COMELEC).

Provincial Election Supervisor Marino  Salas said despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of voting registrants in Pangasinan reached 2, 036,199 as of July 19, 2021, an increase of almost 90,000 as compared to the 1,946,682 registrants in the 2019 elections.

“We have breached the 2-million mark and madadagdagan pa ito because registration is until September 30,” Salas said during the Tongtongan ed PIA program, Wednesday.

Salas said voter registration has become more challenging because of the pandemic as the Commission is not only concerned about encouraging more people to register but also on safeguarding the health and safety of the registrants and their personnel.

“COMELEC devises various  means and methods for lesser possibilities of transmission of the virus while still doing our mandate,” he added.

Salas said COMELEC has launched the mobile application among the 18 municipalities in Pangasinan identified by the commission as pilot areas and this does not require internet connectivity.

Another platform is the I-Rehistro which registrants can  access with the use of internet.

Salas said Comelec will also implement limitations on the number of people allowed in the office during the filing of certificates of candidacy in October 2021.

He said they  are still awaiting for the final regulations on the campaign period from the COMELEC head office for the May 2022 elections.

“Defintely may mga pagbabago (ng rules) and we will ensure that minimum health standards will be followed during the filing and campaign period and even in the canvassing,” he added.

The Comelec supervisor urged qualified voters to register through the various platform and not to wait  for the September 30, 2021 deadline to avoid long queue and commotion.  (JCR/VHS, PIA Pangasinan)
