NNC continues to address nutrition problems amidst pandemic

ZAMBOANGA CITY, July 30 (PIA) – The National Nutrition Council 9 (NNC-9) continuously addresses common nutritional problems encountered in the region such as malnutrition, stunting, wasting and obesity amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We did not stop our efforts to reach out to the beneficiaries especially the target groups, our mothers, children and elderly,” said Nimfa Ekong, NNC-9 Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator.

She emphasized to all the mothers and parents the importance of first 1000 days of a child. This period is a golden window of opportunity where the health nutrition and development foundation of a child is established.

“There is a need to know about this because we want to ensure that children achieve full development and potential and we want to avoid the problems of malnutrition and stunting,” Ekong added.

Stunting refers to the slow height development of a child. Ekong also highlighted that the pandemic has negative implication on nutrition food security and health system. With this, there are also interruptions on nutrition programs because of limited face to face and on ground activities for the beneficiaries.

However, government efforts still continue in providing food packs which contains nutritional contents for the mothers and children in order to address the immediate causes of malnutrition. (RVC/MLE/PIA9-Zamboanga City)
