12 NegOr students qualify for DOST scholarship

DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental, Aug. 2 (PIA) -- Some 12 third year college students in Negros Oriental have qualified for the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Science Education Institute (SEI) Scholarship Programs for this year.

These students represent the 9% of the 138 students who passed the eligibility screenings for the Junior Level Science Scholarships (JLSS).

The screening determines the eligibility thru E-Scholarship Application System, including the students’ grades for the first two years of college.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, the DOST-SEI employs data analytics to determine the qualifiers.

The successful applicants are taking up science and technology priority courses in science, engineering, and science/mathematics teaching.

Of the 12, seven of the students are currently enrolled in Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) Main Campus, four in Silliman University, and one in NORSU Bais Campus.

The JLSS program supports the DOST-SEI’s goal of increasing the number of scientists and engineers that will help boost knowledge creation and economic productivity in the country.

The program implements three laws, namely, Republic Act No. 2067 (Merit Scholarship Program), R.A. No. 7687 (Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994), and R.A. No. 10612 (Fast-Tracked S&T Scholarship Act of 2013).

R.A. No. 10612 supports the execution of Section 8 of the K to 12 Law by providing a pool of scholar-graduates which can competently teach science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in the secondary education, particularly the Senior High School.

Of the 12 local qualifiers, four qualified under R.A. 7687 while eight are under R.A. 10612.

As qualifiers, they can enjoy a two to three-year DOST Scholarship in their current courses.

The scholarship entitles them to subsidies for tuition and other school fees, monthly living allowance, book allowance, transportation allowance, graduation allowance, thesis allowance, group health and accident insurance starting August in the academic year 2020-2021.
