4 missing, 2 injured in La Union due to ‘Maring’

SAN FERNANDO CITY, Oct. 12 (PIA) -- The provincial disaster management office in La Union reported four missing and three injured individuals due to heavy rains brought by Severe Tropical Storm “Maring.”


The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) reported two children aged five and eleven years old from Barangay Raois in Sto. Tomas town are the youngest among the casualties, according to a situation report as of 5 p.m. on Oct. 12.


 

Also missing are a 45-year-old female and a 50-year-old male, both from Poblacion village in Sudipen.


According to the PDRRMO, search and rescue activities have already begun to locate the missing residents, all of whom are believed to have drowned.


Meanwhile, a 50-year-old man was injured in the town of Tubao. In addition, one person was hurt in Barangay Natividad in Naguilian and another in Luna. There were no more details available.


Based on initial reports gathered by the PDRRMO, the affected population is composed of some 9,233 individuals and 3,291 families from 17 out of the 20 component local government units (LGUs) of La Union.


Flooding, rain-induced landslides, and one structural fire were immediately responded to since the onset of the typhoon on Monday.


Six bridges and one road were reported as impassable, with power outages affecting the majority of the province.


The storm has caused roughly P300 million in damage to the province's agriculture industry as of 3 p.m. Tuesday.


"Maring" exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility at 11 a.m. on Oct. 12, although the state weather bureau predicts mild to moderate, and at times heavy, rainfall through Oct. 13. (JCR/JPD, PIA La Union)
