NCC Stadium, nominee anew in World Architecture Festival

NEW CLARK CITY (PIA) -- New Clark City (NCC) Athletics Stadium was nominated again for another category in the World Architecture Festival (WAF) slated on December 1 to 3 at FIL Exhibition Center in Lisbon, Portugal.

Aside from its previous nomination for the Sport-Completed Buildings Category last July, the athletics stadium is also vying for the Engineering Prize of the international award-giving body.

Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) President and Chief Executive Officer Vince Dizon commended BCDA’s development partner and architectural consultant MTD Philippines and Budji+Royal Architecture+Design, respectively, for the world-class sports facility.

“We are pleased to add another feather on our cap with the World Architecture Festival’s Engineering Prize nomination on top of Sport-Completed Buildings shortlisting. For the New Clark City Athletics Stadium to be recognized at such a high level not only for its architectural brilliance, but also for its structural quality is a nod towards the thousands of engineers, designers and workers who completed this facility within a short period of time,” Dizon said.

The Athletics Stadium was constructed in compliance with international design codes and standards within 18 months.

For his part, MTD Chairman Isaac David expressed his gratitude for another recognition and opportunity to showcase the athletics stadium on the global stage.

“We are truly grateful for the opportunity and privilege to have partnered with the BCDA for the development of the National Government Administrative Center, including sports and non-sports facilities. We’re also glad to have chosen Budji+Royal Architecture+Design as design consultants,” David furthered.

Meanwhile, Budji+Royal Principal Architect and CEO Royal Pineda championed his fellow Filipino architects and engineers in the achievements of the Athletics Stadium.

“We’re currently working with MTD to prepare for the presentation as I need to get their stories on how the vision challenged them all. This is what’s great about having a common vision: we’re committed to work together to overcome all challenges just to make it happen. To recall the journey is both inspiring and rewarding,” Pineda said.

NCC Athletics Stadium, which was inspired by the “caldera” of Mount Pinatubo, the contours of Sierra Madre ranges and details of parols in Pampanga, is the first major sports hub constructed by the government since the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in 1934.

The facility has a 20,000-seating capacity, a nine-lane 400-meter track and field, and another four-lane warm-up track.

It was previously nominated as one of the top 10 best stadiums in the world at the annual Stadium of the Year Awards, and has passed the standards of the International Association of Athletics Federations. (CLJD/TJBM-PIA 3)
