UA, DOST CEST program benefits schools, communities

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) - -   The University of Antique (UA) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Community Empowerment Through Science and Technology (CEST) program has benefitted various schools and communities in the province of Antique.

The DOST-led CEST program was implemented in Antique way back in 2017 covering the 18 towns and in 2019 when it partnered with the University of Antique with the support of Antique’s Lone District Representative and House Deputy Speaker Loren Legarda.

Alfonzo Samillano, Jr., In-charge of the Information and Publication Office, in a press release, said that the undertaking is in line with the goal of the university to "transform lives and build communities."

UA President Dr. Pablo Crespo said that the CEST project implemented in Antique is a unique framework because of the collaboration of various government agencies and their  university.

Phase I was implemented in the 18 municipalities to address the issues faced by the province through the five science and technology (S&T) interventions under the priority areas of CEST namely, liveli-

hood/economic enterprise development, health and nutrition, human resource development, environmental protection and conservation, and disaster risk reduction and management and climate change adaptation.

It was during Phase 1 of the project when the Complementary Food Production Facility – Technology and Livelihood Resource Center at UA Sibalom Campus was established.

The food facility was used to produce the food products distributed to the Department of Education (DepEd) schools in the province via NutriKart.

The NutriKart sold rice and grain-based products such as powder blends, curls, chips, bread, and others to DepEd pupils and students as an alternative to junk food.

To reinforce the interventions implemented in the 18 towns through CEST I, the UA Tario Lim Memorial Campus (UA TLMC) also implemented the project in 2019

The project provided comprehensive technical services and processing equipment to UA TLMC and selected barangays in the municipality. The community then engaged in fish and niche food processing.

The selected barangays were also given the training to strengthen disaster preparedness and climate change adaptation and were provided appropriate technologies and capacity-building training.

These interventions established Technohubs in various municipalities in

the province, namely Tibiao, Caluya, San Remigio, Sibalom, and Hamtic.

It also implemented livelihood projects under Techno-based Barangay Economic Enterprise such as processing of bread and pastry; fish; seaweed; meat; peanut; cacao; high-value crops, root crops, and vegetables; and ice cream. (JBG/UA/PIA-Antique)
