WV agri sector performs better despite pandemic

SAN JOSE Antique (PIA)  - -  Department of Agriculture 6 Regional Executive Director Remelyn Recotier said that Western Visayas performed better in the agriculture sector amidst the pandemic.

This Recorter said during the Network Briefing News program, October 4, hosted by Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar and streamed live over PIA Facebook pages nationwide with Presdient Roxas, Capiz mayor Receliste L. Escolin and youth representative Sam David Q. Andrada of Borres Youth leadership Institute as guests.

Recotier revealed that based on data from the Philippine Statistics Authority, the value of production was high at 4.7%, which is the highest among the regions in the country.

She attributed this to high crop production including that of sugarcane and palay in which the region has a high level of self-sufficiency

“Ang Capiz po ay masyadong mataas ang sufficiency level at 186%,” she said.

Recotier also reported the 9.8% agricultural production of Western Visayas, the 3rd performing region in the country next to Central Luzon and Northern Mindanao.

She also cited the resiliency of the farmers and the fisherfolks that despite quarantine restrictions and dangers brought about by COVID-19, they continue to produce to feed the nation.

With this, she acknowledged the contribution of the farmers and the fisherfolks as frontline workers to ensure the food security of the country. (JBG/PSM/PIA-Antique)
