NFA prioritizes local palay procurement for buffer stocks

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA)  - -  The National Food Authority is giving priority to the procurement of local palay for the government’s buffer stocks.

NFA Iloilo Manager Glenda G. Paz, in a press conference with the local media, emphasized that under Republic Act 11203 or the Rice
Tariffication Law, NFA should ensure that the government has sufficient palay stocks for the Filipinos.

“NFA is not engaged in importation at present but rather we are giving priority to local palay procurement which is the banner program of NFA,” said Paz.

As of October 21, NFA Iloilo Branch which covers the Provinces of Iloilo, Antique, and Guimaras has procured a total of 423,909 bags of palay.

The Province of Antique has a total target of 235,000 bags of palay to be procured and as of October 21, NFA has already bought a total of 25,866 bags from both organizations/associations and individual farmers.

For stocks inventory in both Culasi and San Jose warehouses, there are 23,197 bags of rice equivalent were stocked in cases needed during lean months, for disaster relief operations, institutional requirements of other government agencies and for local rice traders as well.

In terms of palay distribution, NFA has already distributed a total of 226,314 bags.

Paz emphasized that NFA has sufficient rice stocks for the province.

She said that the buying price of NFA for clean and dry palay is at P19 per kilogram with moisture content of not more than 14 percent.

NFA has formulated parameters in buying quality palay from the farmers to ensure that the stocks stored in NFA warehouses are also in good quality when they are given back to the Filipino people.

Paz encouraged the farmers to sell their palay to NFA to take advantage of the high buying price and also to contribute to the food security program of the government. (JBG/PSM/PIA-Antique)
