DCNHS started as a nipa hut structure along Magallanes Street in 1922. It was then known as the Davao Provincial High School.  In 1937 it was renamed as the Davao City High School from where it became popularly known as “City High”.

With the nationalization of public high schools under Republic Act 6655 or the Free Public Secondary Education Act of 1988, the Davao City High School became the Davao City National High School.

Originally the exact date of the school’s foundation was not known, however a DCNHS alumnus Davao City Councilor Maria Belen Sunga Acosta authored a city council resolution declaring June 22, 1922 as the date of the school’s founding.

Presently the DCNHS is the largest public school in Davao City and one of the largest in the Davao Region with more than 16,000 students at its current campus in F. Torres Street.

In its many years of existence, the DCNHS has educated thousands of Dabawenyos.

The school, its faculty, and students have become integral part of the city. And its alumni have contributed immensely to the growth of Davao City.  Many of its graduates have become excellent civic leaders, medical practitioners, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, engineers, teachers and have made themselves useful and productive citizens not only of Davao City but of other parts of the world as well.

"City High" alumni are invited to check out the various programs and activities of the centennial celebration at the Facebook page www.facebook.com/LuntiAtGinto100Years (PIA/RG Alama)
