Baguio City govt, UB honor Tokyo Olympians

BAGUIO CITY (PIA) -- The City Government of Baguio recognized four Tokyo 2020 Olympians during the flag raising ceremony at the Baguio City Hall recently.
 
Baguio City officials led by Mayor Benjamin Magalong, Vice Mayor Faustino Olowan, and the members of the City Council awarded city resolutions and certificates of recognition to the four world class boxers who brought glory to the country during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games  held  from July  23 to  August  8, 2021.


 The awardees  are Nesthy Petecio, the first female Olympic silver medalist in the featherweight division ; Carlo Paalam, silver medalist  in the male flyweight division; Eumir Marcial,  bronze medalist in the male middleweight category and Irish Magno,  finalist in the female flyweight division. The four Olympians are student-athletes of the University of Baguio (UB).  

The city government also recognized their coaches, UB and the families of the Olympians. It is also set to provide financial incentives to the student athletes and their coaches.
  
The Olympic heroes were also treated with a motorcade along the city’s major thoroughfares before proceeding to UB for a homecoming ceremony.
 
UB officials led by President Engr. Javier Herminio Bautista welcomed the student athletes who are the country’s Olympic heroes during their homecoming at their school. He stressed that having Olympians among the student athletes was   a lifelong dream of UB founder, Tatay Fernando Bautista.
 
The Olympians were given the honor to ring the university bell, offer flowers at the bust of the university founders and tour their respective colleges.
 
The homecoming program and a press briefing then followed at the UB Centennial Hal with Bautista, Magalong, SK Federation President and Councilor Levy Orcales, former City Mayor Peter Rey Bautista and other guests.
 
The Olympians were presented with tokens from the University President which include a scholarship grant should  they continue their studies well as scholarship for two of their selected family members or friends at  UB .

 
A tribute program was also held for the late UB Athletic Director Allan Elegado who succumbed to illness recently. The athletes turned emotional as they remembered the life of Coach Allan who took care of all the student athletes and sports scholars in the university. (JDP/RMC- PIA-CAR)
