Pres. Duterte: Typhoon stricken Negros Occ. to get help

KABANKALAN CITY, Negros Occidental (PIA) -- President Rodrigo Duterte gave marching orders to his cabinet secretaries to attend to the needs and concerns of Negros Occidental to restore normalcy after the devastation of typhoon Odette.

During his meeting here, December 20, with local chief executives and national government agency officials, Duterte directed the Department of Energy, Department of Health, the housing office and other departments critical to the recovery of the country’s sugar capital to address its urgent needs.

Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said electricity is an immediate major concern as he called on the DOE to send additional manpower to the province to augment electric cooperatives in their efforts to restore power

Lacson also requested a "Price Watch" to stabilize the prices of commodities.

On a long-term goal, the Governor asked for flood projects for Sipalay City and Ilog-Hilabangan River Basin to prevent flooding.

The Ilog-Hilabangan River is connected to rivers from Negros Oriental and is perennially the cause of major flooding in the southern portion of Negros occidental.

In his briefing to Pres. Duterte, Lacson said that before the coming of Typhoon Odette, the province placed on pre-emptive evacuation some 34,452 Negrenses from 92 barangays in 543 evacuation centers. These efforts, however, appeared to be short as the typhoon affected 181,000 persons in 202 barangays who sought refuge in 624 evacuation centers.

Lacson said the typhoon proved to be more powerful.

As of December 20, the Governor initially placed damage wrought by Typhoon Odette at P5.9 billion. There are 33 persons who were confirmed dead, 14  missing and 36 are injured.

These figures are expected to rise as damage reports are delayed due to communication problems with strong winds and rain toppled down communication poles.

Local city and municipal mayors brought to the attention of Pres. Duterte their concern for financial assistance to be given to typhoon victims who either totally or partially lost their homes.

Already, DOE Secretary Alfonso Cusi said power restoration is in the works and is expected to start this week.

For his part, Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rolando Bautista said family food packs have been distributed and Region VI and in Negros Occidental.

President Duterte assured no typhoon victims will die of hunger as he announced his plan to raise funds for affected regions to speed-up recovery. (AAL/Lljr/PIA6 Negros Occidental)
