GAMU, Isabela (PIA) - - The 98th Infantry Battalion (98IB) said more high-powered firearms and explosives stashed by the New People’s Army (NPA) in a small village of San Mariano, Isabela were recovered on New Year’s Day.
Troops of 95IB under the 5th Infantry Division launched an operation in response to a tip from residents which led to the recovery of two M16 A1 rifles, one Improvised Garand Rifle, and a clip of ammunition in Sitio Nursery, Barangay Disulap.
The locals said they provided the information to the soldiers so that members of the terrorist group will not go near their barangay.
MGen Laurence E Mina, commander of 5th Infantry Division, Philippine Army extended his gratitude to the locals because of their cooperation in ending the local communist armed conflict.
"You have saved the troops and other innocent civilians that maybe victims of that weapons. Thank you for continuously providing information that help in protecting the people against the threat of the terrorist group," the commander said.
"Let us all continue to work hand in hand in achieving peace and inclusive development for our community, our family, and for the future generations." the general added.
The 5ID previously reported that residents of insurgency-influenced barangays and former rebels had expressed willingness to work with the military troops in pursuing the remaining NPA members and locating their stashed weapons in its area of jurisdiction by sharing information with intelligence value.
