DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental, Jan. 17 (PIA) -- Metro Dumaguete College's (MDC) young skilled students of tech-voc gained two gold medals during the 2021 Philippine National Skills Competition of Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) in Taguig City.
Gold medal winners Dreamerson Garay and Camia Faye Duran for Mobile Robotics and Jerson Villares for Floristry Category from MDC also received a cash prize of P30,000 and certificates from TESDA.
Dr. Delma Manila, president of MDC, said the gold medalists shall begin their series of trainings and preparations for the World Skills Competition in October 2022 in Shanghai, China.
Over 400 young talents participated in 39 trade areas to compete for a place to represent Philippines in the upcoming international skills competition.
“MDC is able to produce talents that can compete internationally and despite the challenges that we have, our students range from different sectors or who are financially challenged but they are interested to learn for their education funded by the government,” said Manila.
MDC has more than 1,200 TESDA scholars enrolled in tech-voc for diploma program which include software engineering and digital arts technology leading to the degree of Bachelor in Computer Science; and tourism technology diploma leading to the degree of Tourism Management.
This three-year diploma program by TESDA started in 2019 at MDC.
It is expected to produce 75 pioneering students who will graduate in April 2022.
TESDA Provincial Director Joel Villagracia said students who are interested to proceed and obtain a bachelors degree program would only take one year to finish the four-year course.
Villagracia said with better training grounds, the importance of skills will be understood as well as the value of continuous learning.
“With this accomplishment or recognition of our students, we hope we can multiply more to develop their skills. That’s why we are inviting everyone to join MDC to give themselves a chance to learn more,” the MDC official said.
More than 300 students are also expected to graduate under the diploma program in the next semester offered by TESDA and MDC.
For short-term program, the MDC also offers computer program servicing, bookkeeping for Senior High School scholars.
More than 200 Senior High School student-scholars from different schools sent by the Department of Education to MDC as part of the joint delivery program have been undergoing laboratory on computer system/program servicing. (JCT/PIA7 Negros Oriental)
