RITM urges public to use FDA-approved self-test kits

QUEZON CITY (PIA) – The Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) on Wednesday urged the public to only use COVID-19 antigen test kits authorized by the country’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In the public briefing, RITM Laboratory Chief Armando Tandoc III emphasized that the use of self-administered test kits approved by the authorities is important to ensure the accuracy of the results.

Tandoc said FDA-authorized self-test kits have been evaluated by experts and come with complete instructions.

“Mahalaga po na iyong gagamitin natin na mga kit sa pag-test ay otorisado po ng ating FDA na siyang pangunahing ahensiya po na nag-a-approve ng mga authorization nito,” he said.

Since the RITM requires manufacturers to submit technical documents on the performance and validation of the kits, Tandoc assured the public that the approved kits are effective in detecting the virus that causes COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the two COVID-19 self-test kits approved by FDA were, Panbio Covid-19 Antigen Self-Test of the Abbott Rapid Diagnostics and SARS-CoV-2 Antigen Rapid Test of the Labnovation Technologies Inc.

“To ensure safety, efficacy and quality of these health products, you are advised to source your COVID-19 test kits from FDA authorized importers who are holders of the Certification for the COVID-19 test kits or their duly authorized FDA licensed distributors,” the FDA said.

The Department of Health (DOH) is expected to release the guidelines on the use of COVID-19 self-administered test kits. (JAFD/PIA-IDPD)
